Soup Kitchen Holiday Wish List

November 14th, 2008 | Uncategorized

Give a gift of hope this holiday, and help your local soup kitchen obtain items that are really needed. Each week we serve a hot meal to over 80 Greenpointers. With the downturn in the economy, we’re feeding increasing numbers of people. Here’s what we need to get this job done:

A new stove - our old stove is over 60 years old and sadly needs to be replaced.
A light for the outside entryway of the building - the current light does not work.
    An industrial dishwasher.
    A new sink.
Paper plates, paper cups, paper bowls, napkins, forks, spoons and knives.
    Iced tea mix.
    Coffee.
    Paper towels.
    Toilet paper.
You can also make a donation to help pay for the heat (we expect our oil bill to be at least $4000 this year) or for the electricity (which runs about $250 per month)

We also need to repair the basement so that we can serve our overflow crowd downstairs. This means installing a new floor, painting the walls, installing some kitchen base cabinets and improving the lighting. We’re starting a fund to complete this work, and would welcome any donations toward the project. We are also looking for construction/DIY people to volunteer for the project. If you are interested, please send an email to pastor {at} greenpointchurch {dot} org. Thanks!

In the news

October 14th, 2008 | Uncategorized

October has been a busy news month. Here are a few of the recent mentions that we’ve received online and in the press:

The fancy porcelain tiles in the church parlor are the subject of an October 7th article in the New York Times. The Brooklyn Eagle picked up the piece from the Times and added a little extra.

Brooklyn Based, a totally fabulous local site, recommends volunteering at the soup kitchen, food pantry and lunch program.

Heather also has a post on the new face of need in Greenpoint as well as a shout out about the new lunch program. This week’s Greenpoint Gazette also has a piece on the increase in neighborhood homelessness.

And speaking of Heather, a special thank you goes to her husband who helped secure the church’s router and fix some of our wireless issues. THANKS SAM!
