Work late and still want to volunteer? How about Wednesday evening from 6-9pm.

July 21st, 2010 | Uncategorized

Our food pantry continues to grow. We’re now providing 350 people with bags of groceries on Thursdays. We’ve had to make a few changes to keep up with this record demand.

* We’ve added additional hours. The pantry is now open on Thursdays from 1pm to 5pm.
* We’ve added a new volunteer shift on Wednesday nights from 6-9pm. Volunteers will help prepare bags for the following day’s pantry distribution.

If you’d like to volunteer, please come any time after 6pm. Don’t worry if you’re late or if you have to leave early. Any time you have to offer will be greatly appreciated. This workshift can accommodate a large number of people and you can be sure there’ll be work for you to do. So please, feel free to invite your friends.

Hunger Program: Keanu visits & Basement Project Volunteers Needed

December 8th, 2009 | Uncategorized

Keanu Reeves and Vera FarmigaYes, it’s true! Keanu Reeves and Vera Farmiga stopped by this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. Special thanks to Phil Mauro for taking this great photo. They are in the neighborhood filming Henry’s Crime, and the production company is donating funds to help us fix up the basement.

Fix up the basement? The last year has seen an increase in the number of people eating here on Wednesdays, during the summer we used the backyard as an overflow space (thank you Brooklyn Kitchen for providing the funds for the picnic tables). Now that it’s cold, we are using the basement. But it’s really depressing.

Designers Goil Amornvivat (of Bravo’s Top Design) and Tom Morbitzer have volunteered their expertise to create a plan to spread some sprucing-up cheer to drab space. We just need to organize teams of volunteers to help implement the plan. Here’s what we need:

* folks with basic painting talents
* people who can help put down a new floor
* someone to patch up holes in the existing drywall
* an electrician to wire up new lighting

The first work day is this Dec. 12 from 10am to 5pm. Other work days will be posted soon.
