Announcing the Greenpoint Interfaith Food Team

April 6th, 2009 | Uncategorized

We are very excited that Greenpoint’s synagogue, Congregation Ahavas Israel, and mosque, the Greenpoint Islamic Center are partnering with us to help combat hunger in North Brooklyn. Together, we are creating the Greenpoint Interfaith Food Team (GIFT) a new 501c3 corporation (pending New York State approval) that will operate the soup kitchen and food pantry.

What does this mean? For now, there is not much of a difference in the way that the food programs run. Because of kosher and halal requirements, it is easiest for the soup kitchen and food pantry to remain based in our church. But, we will no longer be serving any pork products.

With our three faith communities working together to combat hunger, we have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to those around us that Christians, Jews and Muslims can work together to care for others. It also provides us with a chance to get to know one another, to deepen our friendships and to learn about each other’s faith, history and tradition.
