Easter is almost upon us! (Thank goodness, Lent is getting long in this final stretch.)

On Thursday, March 28th, we will be hosting a Maundy Thursday service at 7pm. This service commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. We invite you to come and enjoy some contemplative eating with us. The service will involve the serving and enjoying of a communal meal together.

On Good Friday, our service will begin at 7pm as well. Chidlcare will be provided on both Thursday and Friday

Once again on Easter, we present Easterpalooza! Our Easter worship celebration is a great opportunity to invite a friend. The gospel choir will be performing. After the service there will be an Easter egg hunt for children and a time for hanging out, making art, and enjoying some tasty food. Interested in helping with the food? Talk to Jon Herzog. Want to help dream up some of the art projects or organize the Easter egg hunt? Talk to Pastor Jen. Or you can just show up!

Our church has historically been aligned with the Dutch Reformed Church of America, ties that we have kept because of the historical and personal connections between our church and the others around the city and country. We are now considering becoming a dually aligned church (a church that belongs to two denominations simultaneously). So we would still keep our ties and relationship with the Reformed Church, and we have a relationship with the United Church of Christ (commonly called the UCC). The UCC is a progressive protestant denomination, in which both Pastor Jen and Pastor Ann have been ordained. On April 14th, after church every member of our church is invited to make themselves heard on this matter. We will have a congregation-wide vote to see if joining the UCC is the right direction for our church to move in, and to accept the bylaws we have written. In the meantime, there will be information about the UCC and copies of the bylaws to be voted on available in the church building (you can also check out www.ucc.org). If you have questions, feel free to talk to Pastors Ann, Jen or Amanda.

Welcome to that favorite time of year: Lent! Okay, perhaps not your favorite time of year. But, here at Greenpoint, we invite you to take a new look at it this year. During these last cold blasts that winter has to give, take a moment for reflection. This is a time for experimenting: while Lent is traditionally associated with fasting and solemn repentance, it’s done in the name of striving to connect with God. Let this be a time to wipe away those things that keep us from opening our hearts to God and to one another. Sometimes that might mean making a new commitment of some kind (yes, even fasting counts), that reminds you to look to God for love and support. Oh, and look to the church, too! Please join us now, or anytime, for support, community or a plain-ol’ good Lenten time.

The past few weeks have been challenging ones in the time of our church. While we were hopeful that a respite bed program would work well for our neighborhood and those seeking shelter, we are saddened that, for a variety of reasons, the respite program will move to Church of the Ascension on India Street. We wish them many blessings and are grateful that the program will continue to give refuge to those who need shelter from this cold winter. We hope that we can continue to dialogue with our neighbors and community on how best to solve our community issues. We appreciate the support we received, and hope that we can maintain healthy relationships across the board going forward.
