Affordable Housing
Greenpoint and Williamsburg are rapidly changing communities. Major cultural, economic and social shifts have altered the landscape in our area. No change is as far-reaching as the precipitous increase in the cost of housing.
With recent the rezoning of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, the pace of luxury development has skyrocketed, especially along the waterfront. There is a concern that in the future, average working class and middle income families may not be able to afford to live in this area.
Decent, affordable housing keeps neighborhoods vibrant and gives the people who help make New York City great an opportunity to live in the city they love. The church is committed to this community and wants to see Greenpoint and Williamsburg blossom thanks to the full diversity of our residents - and that includes artists and laborers, business executives and civil employees.
Why should a church care about housing? Because Jesus talks a lot more about economic realities than just about anything else. And in NYC, real estate is one of the primary things that divides “the haves” from “the have nots.”
Currently, we’re in the process of gathering information about affordable housing as well learning as the current housing situation in our community. We’re also planning a teach-in on affordable housing for later in the fall.
In the meantime, information on the affordable housing lottery for apartments at 20 N. 5th St. in Williamsburg is available through the City of New York web site.
