Dinner/Pantry

There are far too many people who are hungry in Greenpoint. Several people ring the church’s doorbell each month looking for a meal or some canned goods. In the Bible, Jesus clearly commands us to feed all God’s people. Because of this, our congregation has helped give birth to three programs to help feed hungry people in New York City.

Mondays – Bag lunches are distributed at the church from 1-2pm. This program is developed in conjunction with the Lutheran Church of the Messiah and St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Wednesdays – A yummy community dinner is served at the church from 6-7pm. Volunteers are needed from 2-7:30pm.

Thursdays – Groceries are given out at the church from 1-5pm. Volunteers are needed from 9am-6pm.

There are no requirements to participate. All people are welcome regardless of their faith background or economic situation. We do not require a reference or identification. Just come and enjoy some food.

Your help is needed! Please volunteer.
* Wednesday volunteers are needed to: cook the meal (from 2-5:30), set up the dining room (3-5pm), serve the meal (6-7pm) and clean up (6-8pm). We also need people on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm to help prepare bags of food for the food pantry.

* Thursdays volunteers are needed to: set up (9am-noon), distribute food (1-5pm), and clean up (3-6pm).

Please email info [at] greenpointchurch [dot] org if you are interested.

Please consider making a donation to the food pantry and dinner. As of July 2010 we are handing out upwards of 350 bags of groceries each week. Cans and boxed food can be left in the collection box in the church parlor or outside the front door of the church.

Most of the food we distribute comes from the Food Bank of NYC. We are able to make a complete bag of groceries for $6.75. A gift of $67.00 can provide a week’s groceries to 10 people. You can donate securely online by clicking on the button below.

We could not feed so many people without help from the following programs. A special thank you to New York City, New York State and to the Federal government for funding these critical emergency food programs.

TEFAP – The Emergency Food Assistance Program
HPNAP – Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program
EFAP – Emergency Food Assistance Program
