Encouraging the Arts

RachaelChurches have a long tradition of encouraging the arts. It’s not by chance that Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel and Handel wrote the Messiah. They were supported by the church!

In our day and age, the wider church’s commitment to art may seem to have waned a bit. But not at 136 Milton Street! We want to encourage creativity in our community, and are open to any ideas folks might have for how this can be done.

So far, this is what we’ve been doing:

    * Holding jazz worship services with the Red Hook Ramblers
    * Sponsoring Music on Milton, a monthly evening featuring the sounds of local musicians
    * Developing a community art gallery in the church parlor
    * Opening our doors to other musicians to hold concerts and shows at the church

The Grenpoint Reformed Church art gallery is open Fridays from 6-8pm.

If you have an idea about how we might encourage the arts, would play at a future Music on Milton event or would like to show your art in our soon-to-be completed gallery, please email art[at]greenpointchurch[dot]org or call us at 718.383.5941 and let us know.
