In the news

October 14th, 2008 | Uncategorized

October has been a busy news month. Here are a few of the recent mentions that we’ve received online and in the press:

The fancy porcelain tiles in the church parlor are the subject of an October 7th article in the New York Times. The Brooklyn Eagle picked up the piece from the Times and added a little extra.

Brooklyn Based, a totally fabulous local site, recommends volunteering at the soup kitchen, food pantry and lunch program.

Heather also has a post on the new face of need in Greenpoint as well as a shout out about the new lunch program. This week’s Greenpoint Gazette also has a piece on the increase in neighborhood homelessness.

And speaking of Heather, a special thank you goes to her husband who helped secure the church’s router and fix some of our wireless issues. THANKS SAM!

Monday Lunch Program

October 6th, 2008 | Uncategorized

Thanks to the amazing support of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Messiah, bag lunches will be distributed to homeless individuals along Manhattan Ave. each Monday from noon to 1pm. If you are interested in volunteering, we need people to help make sandwiches every Sunday afternoon, and we also need people to help distribute the lunches on Mondays. Interested? Call the church at 718-383-5941 or email us at pastor [at] greenpointchurch [dot] org.

Praying the Hours

October 6th, 2008 | Uncategorized

This fall, a group of us are taking a prayer plunge and choosing to follow the ancient tradition of praying the hours. We’re using The Divine Hours Pocket Edition as a resource, and are sharing our experiences with one another through an online discussion group and occasional weekend brunch gatherings in the manse. You don’t have to be a member of our congregation or even someone who lives in the NYC area to participate. At least one person already involved lives in Europe. Just order a copy of the book, sign up for the online discussion group, and start praying.
