For over one hundred and fifty years, the people of the Greenpoint Church have faithfully served the neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This is a congregation of young and old from a variety of backgrounds with a myriad of interests. Our small size allows everyone to get to know one another and care for one another.
We’re committed to the presence of children and young adults in the life of the church and to finding exciting ways of merging worship, spirituality and the arts. We’ve become a spiritual home for all kinds of people – especially people who are surprised to find themselves going to church! Many of our members were raised in theologically orthodox or more conservative traditions. And some may continue to hold to what might be called an orthodox understanding of the faith. Others are far more liberal and open in their personal faith. And more than a few may admit that they don’t know exactly what they believe, but they want to grow in their faith. Greenpoint is a place that is willing to exist within a primary tension of the Christian faith – that not everyone sees and experiences Christ in the same way. We come from different places with different understandings of what the faith means, but we hold to the motto “in essentials unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things charity.
The church is located on Milton Street, just off Manhattan Avenue, in the mansion once owned by Thomas Smith, founder of the Union Porcelain Works. This historic building is well suited to providing an intimate setting for worship and community events. Because the church does not look like a traditional church, it encourages all those who enter it to think of new and different ways to serve God and neighbor.
The Greenpoint Reformed Church welcomes all people regardless of spiritual background, race, gender, sexual orientation, marital status or political viewpoints. We are members of the Reformed Church in America. While valuing its denominational affiliation, the church consists of people from a variety of faith traditions and actively participates in ecumenical events throughout Greenpoint.
Occasional thoughts on ministry, theology and life in Greenpoint can be found on Pastor Ann’s blog.
